Walkable Bikeable Delaware Wins National Recognition
At a packed reception at the National Bike Summit, the Alliance for Biking & Walking announced its 2012 Advocacy Award winners. Walkable Bikeable Delaware was honored with the Winning Campaign of the Year award.
The success of Walkable Bikeable Delaware shows what can be accomplished when bicyclists are united and focused. Even more importantly, it underlines the importance of forming coalitions with the public health, business, environmental and civic communities (and not just with a narrowly defined “bicyclist community”). Bicycling (and walking!) belong to everyone. We all suffer from the effects of the walking- and bicycling-unfriendly built environment that has been created in Delaware over the last 50+ years, and we will all benefit from the investments that the General Assembly voted last year to start reversing some of the damage. And we will all benefit even more if the General Assembly this summer approves Governor Markell’s proposal to make even larger investments to “make Delaware one of the most walkable and bikeable states in America…”
Walkable Bikeable Delaware belongs to many people and many organizations, including:
Nemours Health and Prevention Services
Bike Delaware
Delaware Bicycle Council
American Heart Association
Delaware Nature Society
Greater Wilmington Convention & Visitors Bureau
Historic New Castle Alliance
Riverfront Development Corporation
East Coast Greenway Alliance
